Do Egocentric information networks influence technical efficiency of farmers? Empirical evidence from Ghana

چکیده
Abstract We investigate the impact of farmers’ egocentric information network on technical efficiency and its distribution in network, using observational data 600 farmers from northern Ghana. exploit community detection algorithms to endogenously identify homogeneous communities with known structures account for spatial heterogeneity, a stochastic frontier model that controls social selection bias. The empirical results reveal at global level, strongly correlate their networks. Our findings also show who are technically less efficient tend depend more networks improve efficiency. further find estimating dependence without accounting heterogeneity can lead underestimation high (efficiency score >0.6) performing farmers, while overestimating medium scores between 0.36–0.5) low 0.1–0.35) farmers. suggest identifying central improving knowledge farmer-to-farmer extension organization, contribute productivity many

متن کاملFarmers Willingness to Pay for Crop Insurance: Evidence from Eastern Ghana
Crop insurance is a risk management tool with the potential of dealing with risk more efficiently, the study uses a dichotomous contingent valuation method to elicit the willingness to pay for crop insurance among cereal farmers in the Eastern region of Ghana. The study employed descriptive statistical techniques to analyse primary data obtained from 208 sampled farmers in the region. Approxima...
متن کاملOwnership and technical efficiency of hospitals: evidence from Ghana using data envelopment analysis
BACKGROUND In order to measure and analyse the technical efficiency of district hospitals in Ghana, the specific objectives of this study were to (a) estimate the relative technical and scale efficiency of government, mission, private and quasi-government district hospitals in Ghana in 2005; (b) estimate the magnitudes of output increases and/or input reductions that would have been required to...
متن کاملUnderlying Constructs of Farmers’ Perceptions towards Bt Cotton Among Former Cotton Farmers in Northern Ghana: Empirical Application of Q Methodology
It is often argued that learning from best examples in the neighbouring Burkina Faso and elsewhere, Ghana can succeed in revamping the collapsing cotton industry by introducing Bt cotton to farmers. This paper therefore presents a survey findings on farmers’ views and perceptions towards the possible introduction of Bt cotton. A stratified random sampling techniques was applied in selecting 254...
متن کاملThe influence of management characteristics on the technical efficiency of wheat farmers in eastern England
Technical efficiency of wheat farms in eastern England is measured through the estimation of a stochastic frontier production function using panel data for the 1993–1997 crop years. Variations in the technical efficiency index across production units are explained through a number of managerial and farm characteristic variables following Battese and Coelli (1995) [Empirical Econ. 20, 325–332] a...
